What Is Limp Mode?
Limp mode, sometimes called safe mode or reduced power mode, is how your engine management protects the engine and gearbox when it detects a fault. Power is cut, revs may be limited and the gearbox can stay in one gear. It lets you get home or to a garage, but it is not something to keep driving on.
Clearing the code with a cheap reader may switch the light off for a while, but if the cause is still there, limp mode will come back. Some faults, such as an overloaded DPF, can also get worse and more expensive the longer you leave them.
Common Causes of Limp Mode
- EGR valve sticking open or closed through carbon build-up
- Blocked or overloaded DPF after failed regenerations
- Boost faults, such as split intercooler hoses or leaking pipes
- Turbo problems, including sticking vanes or a failing actuator
- AdBlue and SCR faults, such as failed pumps, NOx sensors or tank heaters
- Faulty sensors, including MAP, MAF, pressure and temperature sensors
- Software or communication glitches between control modules
Many of these are linked. A blocked EGR can lead to a sooty DPF, and a boost leak can trigger several codes at once. That is why proper diagnosis matters.

Our Free Diagnostic Check
We plug in, read every stored and pending fault code, and look at live data such as boost pressure, DPF soot load and sensor readings. We then explain in plain English what we have found and what your options are.
The check is free and there is no obligation. If the fix is a part we do not supply, we will tell you what it is so you can take it to your usual garage. With over 10 years of ECU tuning experience, we have seen most of the common limp mode faults on modern diesels and petrol cars.
Honest Advice, Even When It Is Not a Software Fix
Not every limp mode problem can or should be solved with software. A split boost hose, a failed turbo or a faulty sensor needs a physical repair, and no remap will change that. We would rather tell you that than sell you something that will not work.
Where software is the right answer, for example a recurring EGR, DPF or AdBlue fault, we can usually carry it out the same day. Typical jobs take 60 to 90 minutes.

Software Solutions We Offer
- EGR solution from £180, or £40 extra with a Stage 1 remap
- DPF solution from £180, or £40 extra with a Stage 1 remap
- AdBlue solution from £250, usually £250 to £299 depending on the vehicle
- Stage 1 plus EGR or DPF solution combo from £290
We take a full backup of your original ECU software first, so all work is reversible. These solutions are typically sold for off-road, export or motorsport use in many markets, so please be aware of MOT and emissions rules. We will never promise an MOT pass.
Vehicles We Diagnose
- VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT TDI
- BMW and Mercedes diesels
- Ford Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger
- Vauxhall Vivaro and Movano
- Land Rover and Range Rover
- Iveco Daily, Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay
- Motorhomes on common van bases
