  • Improved throttle response and driveability
  • Better fuel economy — many customers report 10-15% MPG improvement
  • Smoother power delivery with reduced turbo lag

How It Works

We connect our professional tuning equipment to your vehicle's OBD port and read the factory ECU map. We then modify key parameters including fuel injection timing, turbo boost pressure, and ignition timing to unlock the performance your manufacturer left on the table. The process takes 1-2 hours and requires no physical modifications to your engine.

Why a Custom Stage 1 Remap Beats Generic Tuning Files

Not all Stage 1 remaps are created equal. The cheap £99 'remap special' deals you see online are almost always generic files — a single map flashed onto every car of that variant, regardless of its specific condition, fuel quality, or modification history. These often work, but they leave a lot of safe headroom on the table and occasionally cause running issues on cars that aren't 100% factory-fresh.

At CB Autotuning Cambridge, every Stage 1 remap is a custom file built around your specific vehicle. We start by reading your factory ECU map, checking for any existing modifications or sensor faults, then build a tailored map that maximises gains within your engine's safe tolerances. The result is more power, better drivability, and zero compromise on reliability.

We also run a full diagnostic check before and after the remap. If anything looks off — a worn MAF sensor, a small boost leak, an EGR partially stuck — we'll flag it before tuning. This catches problems that a generic flash would either ignore or be defeated by, and is one reason we have a near-zero comeback rate on Stage 1 work.

Real Cambridge Stage 1 Remap Case Study — VW Golf GTD

We recently published a full case study from a Stage 1 remap on a 2018 VW Golf GTD owned by a customer in Milton, Cambridge. The car was completely standard, 47,000 miles, full service history, and healthy on diagnostics — exactly what we want before writing a Stage 1 file.

Before figures (factory map): 181 BHP, 376 Nm, 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, 46.2 MPG. After our custom Stage 1 file: 219 BHP, 448 Nm, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, 52.7 MPG. That's +38 BHP, +72 Nm and a 14% improvement in real-world fuel economy — all from a 90-minute mobile remap on the customer's driveway, with zero hardware changes and no warning lights.

These numbers are typical for the GTD platform but every car is different. A BMW 320d sees similar percentage gains. A Ford Transit 130 EcoBlue typically goes from 130 to 175 BHP. A Ford Focus ST 250 reaches around 290 BHP. Whatever you drive, we'll quote honest expected figures up front — no marketing hype.

What Power Gains Should I Expect From a Stage 1 Remap?

Typical Stage 1 gains on a turbocharged diesel are 20-30% more BHP and 20-25% more torque. On petrol turbocharged engines, gains are usually 15-25% BHP. Naturally-aspirated petrols see more modest gains of 5-12% — the lack of a turbocharger limits how much can be safely unlocked through software alone.

Real-world examples from our Cambridge customers: a VW Golf 2.0 TDI 184 BHP rises to around 235 BHP and 470 Nm torque. A BMW 320d (190 BHP) goes to 240 BHP and 490 Nm. A Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue 130 jumps to 175 BHP and 470 Nm. An Audi A4 2.0 TFSI hits roughly 290 BHP from a stock 252.

What matters more than peak figures is where the extra power lives. A Stage 1 remap adds enormous mid-range torque — exactly the part of the rev range you actually use when overtaking, towing or pulling away from a roundabout. The result is a car that feels two classes more powerful in everyday driving.

Is a Stage 1 Remap Safe for My Engine?

Yes — when done properly. A Stage 1 map operates within the safe mechanical tolerances of your engine's standard components: turbocharger, injectors, intercooler, clutch and gearbox. We've remapped thousands of cars across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire without engine failures.

The horror stories you read online almost always trace back to one of three things: a generic file flashed onto a car with pre-existing mechanical problems, an unqualified tuner pushing the map too far for the hardware, or a car that was already on its last legs when the remap happened. Quality custom mapping eliminates all three risks.

Every remap we do includes a full backup of your factory ECU map. If you ever need to return the car to standard for any reason — dealer warranty work, sale to a non-tuning enthusiast, MOT concerns — we can restore the original map in under an hour.

Stage 1 Remap and Fuel Economy — What Cambridge Drivers Actually See

One of the most pleasant surprises for our customers is the impact of a Stage 1 remap on fuel economy. Diesels in particular tend to see noticeable MPG improvements because the extra low-end torque means fewer downshifts, lower cruising RPM, and less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds. Customers commuting from villages around Cambridge into the city, or driving the A14 daily, are the biggest winners.

Real figures from our Cambridge customer base: a VW Golf GTD went from 46.2 to 52.7 MPG (+14%), a BMW 320d from 48 to 54 MPG (+12.5%), a Ford Transit 130 from 32 to 38 MPG (+19%) when driven sensibly. Petrol turbo cars see smaller gains — usually 3-7% better MPG when driven the same way — because petrol engines don't benefit as dramatically from torque-led economy improvements.

The catch: if you can't keep your foot off the throttle (we get it — the new power is addictive), MPG will drop initially. Most customers find their economy normalises after the first 500 miles as the novelty wears off and the car settles into its new character.

FAQ

Stage 1 Remap Cambridge — FAQ

Our Stage 1 remap in Cambridge starts from £250, including our fully mobile service anywhere in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire at no extra charge. Combo deals available — Stage 1 + EGR delete £290, Stage 1 + DPF delete £290.
How much power will I gain from a Stage 1 remap?
Typical gains are 20-30% more BHP and 20-25% more torque. Turbocharged diesel and petrol engines respond best — a Golf GTD goes from 184 to ~220 BHP, a BMW 320d from 190 to ~240 BHP, a Ford Transit 130 to ~175 BHP. We've published a full before/after case study with dyno figures from a recent Cambridge job.
Is a Stage 1 remap safe for my engine?
Yes. A Stage 1 remap works within the safe tolerances of your standard engine components. We use custom maps tailored to your specific vehicle, ensuring reliability is maintained. All our remaps come with a full money-back guarantee.
Will a Stage 1 remap void my warranty?
If your vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, a remap may affect it. However, many vehicles we remap are outside warranty. We can advise on your specific situation, and we always take a full backup so the original map can be restored before any dealer visit.
How long does the remap take?
Typically 1-2 hours from start to finish. We work via your OBD port — no need to remove the ECU and no physical engine modifications required.
Can you remap my car at my home in Cambridge?
Yes! We offer a fully mobile remapping service across Cambridge and all of Cambridgeshire. We come to your home, workplace, or any convenient location with no travel surcharge.
Where in Cambridge are you based?
Our workshop is at Unit 4, New Close Farm, Milton, Cambridge CB24 6DQ — just off the A14 at Milton, 5 minutes from Cambridge North station and Cambridge Science Park. We also offer a fully mobile Stage 1 remap service across the city and surrounding villages.

Around 1-2 hours from start to finish. You can either drop the car at our Milton workshop or we'll come to you anywhere in Cambridge — most local jobs (CB1-CB5, CB22-CB25) are completed the same day, often within a couple of hours of booking.

Yes — we remap cars for a lot of staff and students from Cambridge University, Addenbrooke's, AstraZeneca, ARM and the Science Park. We can come to your workplace car park during your working day so you don't lose any time.
Will a Stage 1 remap improve my fuel economy?
In most cases, yes — provided you drive sensibly. Diesel customers commonly see 10-15% better MPG because the extra mid-range torque means fewer downshifts and less throttle input to maintain motorway speed. Our recent Golf GTD case study saw MPG rise from 46.2 to 52.7 — a 14% gain.
What's the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?
Stage 1 is for completely standard cars and uses only ECU software changes. Stage 2 requires supporting hardware (downpipe, induction kit, often an upgraded intercooler) and unlocks an extra 10-20% on top of Stage 1. For 95% of road cars, Stage 1 is the right choice.
Do you provide a dyno printout?
On request, yes — we can dyno your car before and after for £75 extra. Most customers don't bother because the seat-of-pants difference is so obvious, but if you want documented proof of gains for resale or insurance purposes, just ask.
