Latest job from the workshop: a BMW G20 in for a full ECU unlock and Stage 1 remap. The customer wanted serious numbers without touching the internals, and the G20 platform delivers when the ECU is unlocked properly. Final dyno figures: 400 BHP and 700 Nm of torque.

The challenge with the G20 (and every recent BMW running the Bosch MG1 ECU) is that BMW locked these ECUs from the factory to block aftermarket tuning. A standard OBD flash will fail — the ECU rejects the write. The only way to tune a G20 properly is to unlock the MG1 first, which is a bench job using specialist tooling. That's exactly what we did here.

The process: ECU removed from the vehicle, opened on the bench, unlocked using our MG1 tooling, original file read and backed up to two locations, custom Stage 1 file written for this exact engine and gearbox combination, ECU resealed, refitted and coded back to the car.
