One of the first questions people ask when considering a remap is: 'Is it legal?' The short answer is yes — ECU remapping is completely legal in the UK. However, there are some important things you need to know about insurance, MOTs, and emissions.
ECU remapping itself is not illegal. There is no law against modifying the software on your own vehicle's engine control unit. You can legally remap your car, van, or truck without breaking any laws. This applies to Stage 1 remaps, Stage 2 remaps, and all forms of ECU tuning.
However, you have a legal obligation to inform your insurance company of any modifications to your vehicle, including a remap. Failing to declare a remap could invalidate your insurance policy. The good news is that many specialist insurers offer very competitive rates for remapped vehicles — in many cases, the premium increase is minimal or even zero.
Regarding MOTs, a standard Stage 1 remap will not cause your vehicle to fail its MOT. The MOT emissions test measures what comes out of the exhaust, and a well-calibrated remap does not significantly change tailpipe emissions. Your vehicle will still pass the emissions test.
EGR deletes, DPF deletes, and AdBlue deletes are more nuanced. While the software changes are legal, physically removing emissions equipment can affect MOT compliance. From 2014, the presence of a DPF is checked during the MOT visual inspection for vehicles that were originally fitted with one. We always discuss the full implications with our customers before carrying out any work.
