It's the most common question we get asked at CB Autotuning Cambridge — should I get a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap? The answer isn't always obvious, and the wrong choice can either leave performance on the table or waste money on a map your car can't fully use. Here's the honest comparison.
A Stage 1 remap is a software-only modification. We recalibrate your factory ECU within the safe limits of your standard hardware — turbocharger, injectors, intercooler, exhaust and clutch. Typical gains are 20-30% more BHP and 20-25% more torque. No physical changes to the car. It's reversible, reliable, and works on virtually any modern turbocharged vehicle.
A Stage 2 remap requires supporting hardware modifications. At minimum, that usually means a sports or decat downpipe, a high-flow air filter or intake, and ideally an upgraded intercooler. With this hardware in place, we can push the ECU map further — typically delivering an additional 10-20% on top of Stage 1 gains.
On a VW Golf GTD (2.0 TDI 184 BHP), Stage 1 takes you to around 235 BHP. Stage 2 with a downpipe and intake takes you to 250-260 BHP with significantly more torque. On a BMW M140i (340 BHP), Stage 1 hits 410 BHP. Stage 2 with downpipe pushes 440-450 BHP.
The honest truth: for 90% of road drivers, Stage 1 is the right answer. The gains are massive, the cost is lower, the car remains MOT-friendly (no decat), and reliability is excellent. Stage 2 makes sense if you're already running supporting modifications, you do trackdays, or you want maximum performance and don't mind the extra cost of hardware.
